CEO Strategic Session 7: The Role of Renewables and Other Energy Sources
Much discussion related to renewable energy sources has occurred regarding their use as an alternative source of energy for industrial processes utilized within the petroleum sector. By reducing the use of hydrocarbons for fuel and electricity generation, overall GHG emissions can be reduced. Renewables such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, etc. have significant potential, and great progress has been made over the last number of years to improve efficiencies and lower costs. As well, advances in nuclear power with fourth generation reactors and SMR’s have the potential to supply huge amounts zero emission energy. There are a great number of scenarios for total global energy demand over the short, mid and long term, with variables that vary significantly depending on the assumptions used. The situation has become even more clouded with the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic. Determining the percentage of the energy demand that can be supplied from renewable sources is just as complex and unknown. However, substitution of hydrocarbons with low or zero carbon alternatives, is one of the most effective options in the battle to reduce GHG emissions and needs to be highlighted in the Strategic Program
