Women in Industry

The 24th edition of the World Petroleum Congress held in Calgary, Alberta on September 17 – 21, 2023 will act as a bridge between the traditional energy sector and a more carbon-neutral industry over the next 25 five years. A key social responsibility pillar of the Congress continues to be the inclusion and promotion of Women in Industry.

The percentage of women working in the oil and gas industry remains unchanged at 22%, the same level reported in 2017. By actively ensuring Women in Industry have a role at the 24th World Petroleum Congress, we are doing our part to increase that number.

When you attend the 24th World Petroleum Congress in 2023, you can expect:

Beyond Male Allies by Next Gen Men

Thursday, 21 September
Time: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Location: Sustainability and Social Responsibility Pavilion Stage

The term “Male Allies” is frequently used when advancing gender equity in male-dominant workplaces like Energy, but does it actually capture what it is that we need from men? Hear how to move from benevolent sexism to buy-in to a form of allyship that is active, not passive – a commitment to transforming a system and incurring the necessary costs.

Learning Objectives:

Identify what is implied by the term "Male Allies", both good and unexamined

  • Recognize shortcomings in initiatives championing Male Allies
  • Select a pathway to inviting and engaging men as stakeholders for gender equity

Untapped Reserves 3.0 - A Joint Initiative between BCG and WPC Energy

Earlier this year Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the World Petroleum Council (WPC Energy) launched the third edition of the Untapped Reserves survey which is the only recurring global study on DE&I in the Energy industry.

The survey provides an assessment of diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) within the sector and this third edition will build upon the findings and outcomes of the previous two reports, released in 2017 and 2021.  These reports’ findings were based on substantial proprietary research, with version 2.0 including feedback from more than 2,800 employees across 60 countries, along with more than 50 interviews with senior executives and other industry professionals. In addition, data was analysed from 50 international oil companies, national oil companies, and service providers with collective revenues of $2 trillion and representing about 14% of global employment in the oil and gas sector.

Untapped Reserves 3.0, will increase the industry reach of the project to include data from power, utilities and new energy companies and for the first time will pose detailed questions around other diversity dimensions e.g., race/ethnicity, disabilities, economic background, etc.  It will also examine the full impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the industry’s DE&I progress.

A full report of the survey findings will be launched at the World Petroleum Congress in Calgary, Canada in September 2023.
